Info

This vibrant Pattachitra captures the dramatic climax of the Kaliya Daman leela—Lord Krishna’s divine dance of victory atop the multi-headed serpent, Kaliya. The narrative unfolds in the dark waters of the Yamuna river, which had been poisoned by the serpent’s presence. The central figure, Krishna, is depicted not in battle, but in a rhythmic dance, his weightless steps subduing the venomous king. Flanking him are the Naginis (the serpent’s wives), depicted with hands folded in prayer, pleading for their husband's liberation. Framed by the hanging roots of the Kadamba tree and stylized waves of the river, this composition balances dynamic energy with divine grace—a timeless symbol of cleansing the environment and the triumph of purity over toxicity.

Materials

Painted on handmade patta (traditional treated cloth), prepared to achieve a smooth and durable surface. Natural and mineral-based pigments are hand-mixed to produce saturated blues, greens, reds, yellows, and deep blacks. These pigments are layered carefully to preserve clarity, luminosity, and long-term stability.

Details

The artist builds the scene through successive layers of hand-applied color, maintaining crisp edges and consistent proportions across multiple figures. Intricate border motifs and patterned garments add rhythmic structure, while the central choreography is carefully balanced to create a sense of circular movement and visual flow. The painting is executed entirely by hand without stencils, reflecting strong control of line, spacing, and classical iconography.

Care & Framing Guide

The 'Patti' Advantage: • Naturally Insect Resistant: The canvas is traditionally treated with a blend of tamarind seeds and chalk, making the artwork naturally repellent to insects and highly durable. Handling & Placement: • Clean Hands Only: Natural stone colors absorb oils. Handle by the edges with clean, dry hands. • Avoid Direct Sun: Prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight may fade the mineral pigments. • Never Fold: Always roll the artwork to protect the treated canvas from cracking. Framing Recommendations • Frame behind glass or acrylic to protect against dust and humidity. • Ask your framer for "spacers" to create a tiny gap between the glass and the painting, allowing the natural canvas to breathe • Images show the full artwork including an extended outer border- intended for framing and will not be visible once framed
