Info

Palm-leaf works are among the rarest surviving formats of narrative art In Baraha Avatar, Vishnu rises not in spectacle but in resolve—mid-stride, grounded, unwavering. Etched into palm leaf with unwavering precision, the form carries a rare stillness: strength held in balance, power expressed through restraint. The lines feel almost whispered, yet they endure—much like the story they hold.

Materials

Talapatra works are created through incision that are irreversible- cannot be revised once drawn. Hand-prepared palm leaf (talapatra), naturally aged and treated for longevity. Engraved by hand and finished with organic ink, allowing the leaf’s grain and subtle tonal shifts to remain visible. Each work carries inherent variations in texture and color, making every piece singular.

Details

Every contour is incised by hand using a fine metal stylus, demanding absolute certainty—there is no erasure, no correction. The symmetry of the frame and the rhythmic detailing of ornaments reflect mastery passed through generations, where myth and mathematics meet. Even at this intimate scale, the work rewards close viewing, revealing layers of control and discipline in each line

Care & Framing Guide

The 'Tala' Advantage: Etched Durability: Unlike surface paintings, the artwork is incised into the leaf using an iron stylus and filled with natural lampblack ink. This creates a permanent, water-resistant etching that does not peel or fade over time. Handling & Placement: • Fold, Don't Roll: Composed of interlocking slats tied with a cord. They are designed to be folded like a stack of cards or a fan. Never try to roll them • Clean Hands Only: Handle by the edges or the connecting cords. Framing Recommendations • Float Mounting on a mat board to showcase the unique slat structure and jagged edges. • Use Spacers: Ask your framer for spacers to keep the glass from pressing directly against the surface. Display Options: You can frame them fully expanded to tell the story, or partially folded if you prefer a sculptural look (requires a shadow box frame).
