Info

This monumental Pattachitra presents Lord Jagannath as a living cosmos — a divine presence formed not only in image, but in story, memory, and continuity. The central figure is composed of dozens of miniature narrative scenes, each unfolding a moment from sacred tradition, creating a body that becomes both deity and archive. Dense yet perfectly ordered, the composition invites prolonged viewing, revealing new details with every encounter. Symbolism & Meaning : Jagannath is revered as a form beyond fixed identity — a deity of universality and collective presence. Here, the body of the deity is composed of numerous miniature narratives, suggesting that divinity is shaped by accumulated stories, actions, and memory. The symmetrical architecture expresses cosmic order, while the embedded figures reflect the continuity of tradition across generations. Together, the composition proposes that the sacred is not singular or distant, but carried forward through human devotion and storytelling.

Materials

The artwork is painted on handmade patta (traditional treated cloth), prepared through multiple stages of coating and polishing to create a smooth, resilient surface suitable for long-term preservation. Natural and mineral-based pigments are hand-mixed and applied in layers to produce deep blacks, luminous reds, vibrant yellows, layered blues, and rich greens. These pigments are chosen for their stability and depth, allowing the colors to retain vibrancy while developing subtle tonal character over time.

Details

Created using classical Pattachitra methods, the artwork begins with meticulous freehand black line drawing to establish the entire architectural framework, figure hierarchy, and ornamental structure. The artist constructs the composition in concentric systems — central icon, narrative body, architectural framing, and outer borders — requiring extensive pre-visualization and precision planning. Color is applied in successive, controlled layers, preserving sharp edges and tonal clarity across hundreds of miniature forms. Extremely fine micro-line work appears throughout the jewelry, garments, facial features, narrative figures, and decorative motifs. Every element is executed entirely by hand, without stencils or mechanical aids, reflecting master-level command of traditional visual grammar and sustained concentration over an extended period of creation.

Finishing Touch

Every masterpiece is unique. Before your artwork is secured in its climate-safe tube, the original artist performs a final inspection. They hand-fill and refresh the intricate borders using traditional mineral pigments, ensuring the piece arrives in pristine, gallery-ready condition.

Care & Framing Guide

The 'Patti' Advantage: • Naturally Insect Resistant: The canvas is traditionally treated with a blend of tamarind seeds and chalk, making the artwork naturally repellent to insects and highly durable. Handling & Placement: • Clean Hands Only: Natural stone colors absorb oils. Handle by the edges with clean, dry hands. • Avoid Direct Sun: Prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight may fade the mineral pigments. • Never Fold: Always roll the artwork to protect the treated canvas from cracking. Framing Recommendations • Frame behind glass or acrylic to protect against dust and humidity. • Ask your framer for "spacers" to create a tiny gap between the glass and the painting, allowing the natural canvas to breathe • Images show the full artwork including an extended outer border- intended for framing and will not be visible once framed
